A closer look / The ambassador in France

Paris, through six moments.

Political dialogue, intellectual life and shared remembrance. Six moments from contemporary reporting and archival records illuminate Gazit’s work as ambassador.

At the meeting with Chirac

A June 1976 JTA report places Gazit at Prime Minister Jacques Chirac’s meeting with Israeli Health Minister Victor Shemtov and French Health Minister Simone Veil. It also records an earlier audience with President Valéry Giscard d’Estaing, documenting continued political dialogue between the two countries.[D22]

An encounter with Sartre

At the Israeli embassy in Paris, Gazit attended the presentation of a Hebrew University honorary doctorate to Jean-Paul Sartre. Edwin Eytan’s contemporary JTA report records his agreement with Sartre’s desire for peace, alongside differences over how to achieve it. Simone de Beauvoir and Culture Minister Françoise Giroud also attended.[D18][A3]

Clarifying Israel’s position

Le Monde reported Gazit’s Tribune juive interview: Israel had not conditioned a proposed Rabin visit to France on a reciprocal French leadership visit.[D20]

Following the Coastal Road attack

Following the Coastal Road attack, Gazit asked French Foreign Minister Louis de Guiringaud to close the PLO information office in Paris. Contemporary JTA reporting documents the diplomatic request.[D23]

A connection through remembrance

A French Jewish veterans’ bulletin records that the Bagneux remembrance ceremony was held under the joint patronage of Gazit and French Secretary of State for Veterans Maurice Plantier. It commemorated Jewish soldiers who died for France, Israel’s thirtieth anniversary, and thirty-five years since the Warsaw Ghetto uprising.[D21]
