Mordechai Weinstein, later Gazit, was born in Istanbul on 5 September 1922, to a Jewish family from Ukraine. He chose the Hebrew name later, the family relates, inspired by Jerusalem’s gazit, the dressed ashlar stone he came to know in his archaeology studies. His brother Shlomo took the name after him. His parents were Tzipora and Ephraim.
His younger brother, Shlomo, would later head IDF Military Intelligence and serve as President of Ben‑Gurion University of the Negev; their elder sister was Sarah.
